Historical Note:
Commencing on 9 July 1935 as the Melbourne University Society for Investigation and Research, it became The McCoy Society (in memory of Professor Sir Frederick McCoy) on 1 August and adopted the above name on 30 October. Formed at the suggestion of Vice-Chancellor Priestley and with the advice of Professor Wood-Jones, Dr. Gwynneth Buchanan and Dr. Reuben Patton, a Provisional Committee was elected to prepare a constitution and the inaugural Meeting was held on 16 August 1935.
